Öncü Misses Points By One Place

The ever-changing weather and track conditions at Assen played a large part in the first race outcome for Kawasaki Puccetti Racing rider Can Öncü. He started Race One from 20th position on the grid and finished in 16th place, one position from a points score.

On Friday, under the new weekend race schedule for 2024, Superpole qualifying took place on a wet track surface. Caught out by the conditions Can was an early faller and was unable to set a Superpole time. As a result, it looked like he would have to start Race One from the rear of the grid, but he finally launched from 20th position when his best lap time in free practice was taken into account.

With a fully wet track to face as the lights went out to start the first race Can ended lap one in 24th place. He moved up and down over the first few laps, but as the track dried out his slick race tyre choices allowed him to push on more effectively and finish in 16th place.

After recent surgery, to relive an issue with compartment syndrome in his right forearm, Can’s improvement in pace through the race was a positive sign given that the race reached its full scheduled 18-lap duration.

The second race on Sunday, also scheduled over 18 laps, may possibly be held in dry conditions, if current weather forecasts prove to be correct.

Can Öncü, stated: “A very difficult race that was further complicated by my starting position and the track conditions; only partially dry. I never found the right feeling with the bike or tyres and was sixteenth at the end. Fortunately, we’ve collected a lot of data that can help us for tomorrow’s race, where I’ll do everything I can to score a better result.”

Gabriele Giannini (Prodina Kawasaki) was just one position behind Öncü at the flag, in 17th place. Marcel Brenner (Viamo Racing Kawasaki) started out last on the Race One grid and finished the race in 22nd place. Hikari Okubo (Vince 64 Kawasaki) was 25th.
