Öttl Second In Lone Jerez Race

Kawasaki Puccetti Racing Team riders Philipp Öttl and Can Öncü finished second and sixth respectively in the only WorldSSP Race to be run at the Circuito de Jerez - Angel Nieto.

After a tragic fatality in the WorldSSP300 race on Saturday all subsequent race action was cancelled for the day, which made Sunday’s 17-lap WorldSSP race the only one that took place.

After a superb early showing in practice Öttl took his first career Superpole win on Saturday and the German rider had designs on transforming that into his first race win in Sunday’s 17-lap race.

After an early issue with the front end of his machine in the race he settled into a  strong pace. He could not close the gap to early leader and eventual race winner Dominique Aegerter, with Philipp closing out the race in a clear second position for an important haul of championship points.

Öncü was a fighting sixth in the lone Jerez race, pushing on in what were warm conditions to hold onto sixth place in the race and tenth place overall.

In the championship standings Philipp is now up to third again with 217 points and Can is tenth, with 113.

Now the championship heads to the Autodrom International do Algarve for round ten, between 1 and 3 October.

Philipp Öttl, stated: “I wanted to win this race but I failed by ten seconds. I did not expect the gap to be that big, so I am surprised. I think I picked up some rubber from the track on my front tyre early in the race because it felt like I had a huge problem with the front. I had to check there was no puncture. I was a little bit worried for a while but in the next few corners there was nothing to worry about. By then there was a gap as Aegerter went out in front and I never saw him again. I expected to fight for the win today but it was a fight for track position. I am happy to be on the podium, happy for the team who worked 100% this weekend, but I am also not happy as I wanted to win.”

Can Öncü, stated: “I expected more from this race, but I’ll settle for sixth and the points I’ve earned. I started quite well and was immediately up in the chasing group, but I couldn’t get into a rhythm that would allow me to make up many places. The team worked hard and I did my best, but we still need a little extra in order to be a little further forward.”

Raffaele De Rosa (Orelac Racing VerdNatura Kawasaki) was seventh today, right on the heels of Öncü. Leonardo Taccini (Orelac Racing VerdNatura Kawasaki) placed 19th.

Michel Fabrizio (G.A.P. Motozoo Racing by Puccetti Kawasaki) did not race at Jerez while his team-mate Shogo Kawasaki finished 22nd.
